Mechanically, it runs, drives, and shifts beautifully even when cold, and can be driven anywhere with confidence. The brand new, all-stock 1600 cc replacement engine has less than 2,000 miles on it and runs superbly. The bumpers are original and have never been re-chromed, so while they are in very good condition for being 55 years old, they certainly are not equal to the show quality of the rest of the car. Personally, if I were keeping my VW, I would do nothing more to improve upon it – I would simply continue to drive it and enjoy it on sunny weekends! However, there are a handful of things that could be addressed by the new owner if they desired… 1) The clock does not work; 2) In reverse gear, when backing up, the transmission whines; 3) The gas cap lid opener is a little finicky (but functions); 4) The steering has a little bit of play in it (adjustment?); 5) The previous long-time owners had the floor pans repaired several years before the restoration and while they are repaired very solid, they were not done to factory specs (in other words, if it matters to you - if you get down on your hands and knees and look underneath the car, you can tell they’ve been repaired).
My 1969 Ghia convertible, in my humble opinion, is one of the nicest looking examples around. Drive it to Cars and Coffee, a car show, or simply enjoy driving it in your off time. It is truly stunning, and you certainly do not see many that have had so much money lavished upon them for a restoration! This Ghia was loved like a family member for nearly half a century by a local couple. It is a very special car! My wife and I were recently blessed with our 4th (and final) child (ages 7, 3, 2, and 5 months) and simply do not have time to enjoy it as we should. It's been a fun couple of years, but between family responsibilities and a thriving real estate business, it doesn’t make much sense to let it just sit in our garage and gather dust.
We hope to pass this lovely K-Ghia convertible on to a new caretaker who will cherish it as much as the previous long-time owners - and we have. I am asking less than the restoration costs alone. Serious buyers with the means to provide a good home for this wonderful car, please call me at show contact info. The asking price is $38,500. It is located at my house in Colleyville, TX, which is about 30 minutes west of Dallas. Thanks!
