Prosecutors Reportedly Planning To Drop Charges Against Scottie Scheffler This Week (2024)

Yeah, not surprised they don’t want to touch this one.

The memes were flying over the weekend after the number one golfer in the world was arrested in Louisville during the PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler, one of the most likeable professional golfers on the planet, found himself in quite the predicament early Friday after an apparent traffic misunderstanding with the police led to Scheffler getting pulled out of the vehicle he was driving and put into the back of a cop car. It was a bizarre incident, and resulted in social media sending out a flurry of jokes and memes.

The only information we had from the incident initially was provided by the video that was taken and posted by ESPN’s Jeff Darlington.

It all started when Scheffler pulled up to the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, where a pedestrian had been tragically struck and killed by a bus early in the morning. With police on the scene, Scheffler was apparently unaware of what was going on and, like golfers usually do, attempted to go around the traffic to make his way to the course for his tee time.

An officer then grabbed his car, pulled out the golf superstar, and arrested him on one felony count of assault on a police officer, as well as three misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, criminal mischief and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.

A police report gave the officer’s side of the events, and even detailed the tragic loss of…the officer’s $80 pants.

“Detective Gillis was directing traffic into Gate 1 of the Valhalla Golf Course due to the road being closed in both directions from an earlier fatal collision. Listed subject was driving eastbound to gain access to the course. Subject pulled into the westbound lanes, where outbound traffic was flowing and to avoid backed up traffic. Detective Gillis was in the middle of the westbound lanes, in full LMPD uniform and a hi-visibility yellow reflective rain jacket.

Detective Gillis stopped subject and attempted to give instructions. Subject refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground. Detective Gillis suffered pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist and knee. He was transported to the hospital for further medical treatment by emergency medical personnel. Detective Gillis’ uniform pants, valued at approximately $80 were damaged beyond repair”

For his part, Scheffler issued a statement calling the whole thing a big misunderstanding:

“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”

It seems like quite a bit of an overreaction by the cop, and probably a situation where it was dark and chaotic and you had an overzealous officer who had no idea who Scottie Scheffler was until he was in too deep to turn back.

But it sounds like cooler heads are going to prevail, as it’s now being reported that prosecutors are already planning on dropping the charges against Scheffler.

According to Kevin Van Valkenburg of No Laying Up, sources have indicated that Jefferson County prosecutors will be dismissing the charges early this week, with Scheffler’s arraignment currently scheduled for 9:00 AM on Tuesday.

Some news this morning: According to a source familiar with the office’s thinking, Jefferson County prosecutors are planning, as of now, to drop the charges against Scottie Scheffler early next week. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 9 am on Tuesday. @NoLayingUp

In the meantime, Scheffler managed to shoot the best second round of his PGA career just hours after being released from jail, so maybe it’s time to shed that squeaky clean image for the love of the game.

And I’ll admit, the memes that have come from the whole situation have kept me entertained all weekend.
