History

The property on which Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) is now located was deeded to the U.S. government by the city of San Diego in 1919to build a docking and fleet repair base and commissioned in 1922. The property consisted of 21 water acres and 77.2 land acres with the former being mostly tidelands and marsh flats. After World War II, the name of the Repair Base was changed to Naval Station San Diego. The mission was expanded to support the ships of the Pacific Fleet. During the 90s, Naval Station San Diego became Naval Base San Diego when a realignment designated region commanders, including Navy Region Southwest. NBSD is homeport to more than 60 ships and 200 plus tenant commands, each with specialized missions and purposes. For more information, please visit NBSD’s officialwebsite.

Location

Naval Base San Diego is located in San Diego, California. San Diego has a higher cost of living than most cities in America, but it is also known as "America's Finest City." San Diego is beautiful and the near perfect weather is unbelievable.

Directions

Typically, you will fly into the San Diego International Airport/Lindbergh Field (SAN) at 3225 North Harbor Drive. The airport is conveniently located three miles northwest of downtown San Diego and approximately 8 miles from NBSD.

Shuttle Service/USO

The United Services Organization (USO) office is located outside of Terminal 2. The USO is only open Monday - Friday and hours are subject to change. Contact the USO at 619-235-6503 prior to arrival for the most up-to-date information on services and discounted shuttles to the main gate of the installations. (Advanced reservations may be required.) NBSD does not sponsor a shuttle from the airport to the base. However, check with your command to see if a duty driver or your Command Sponsor can provide transportation.

Taxi or Ride Share Service

Taxi rates from the airport to the base vary. Ride Share services like Uber and Lyft have drop-off locations near the bases. Many ride share services drop off on Northbound Harbor Dr. near 32nd St. or at the NEX Auto Port at the intersection of 32nd St. and Norman Scott Rd.

Local Bus or Trolley

The Metro Transit System (MTS) travels to and from the airport and downtown San Diego, which can connect you to the trolley, train and other bus stops. For public transportation and ground transportation, visit the Volunteer Airport Ambassadors at the Information Desk located in the baggage claim area of Terminals 1 and 2. Visit MTS for information on trolley and bus routes.

Bus routes, fares and schedule information may also be obtained by calling 619-233-3004. The San Diego Trolley has stops outside Naval Base San Diego and is an excellent form of transportation for day-to-day travel to the base.
